Davey Alba has been awarded the 2019
Livingston Award for International Reporting and the 2019
Mirror Award for Best Story on Journalists or Journalism in Peril.
Alba, a 2013 graduate of the
Master of Arts Program, Science Concentration and Senior Technology Reporter for
BuzzFeed News, was honored for her September 2018 story "
How Duterte Used Facebook to Fuel the Philippine Drug War,” a deeply reported investigation of how President Rodrigo Duterte’s regime weaponized Facebook to spread fake news, imprison dissenters, and murder Filipinos.
The Livingston Awards for Young Journalists, which are a program of Wallace House at the University of Michigan, are one of the most prestigious honors for professional journalists under the age of 35 and are the largest all-media, general reporting prizes in American journalism. The Mirror Awards, established by Syracuse University’s Newhouse School, are one of the most important awards for recognizing excellence in media industry reporting.
