M.S. Documentary Alums Abby Lieberman and Joshua Lucas Win 2019 Student Academy Award for "Something to Say"

Congratulations to Abby Lieberman and Joshua Lucas, 2018 graduates of Columbia Journalism School's Master of Science Program, Documentary Specialization, who have been awarded a 2019 Student Academy Award for their documentary Something to Say.  Lieberman and Lucas will be honored at the 46th Student Academy Awards presentation on Thursday, October 17, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

This year, the Academy voted 16 students as winners of the 46th Student Academy Awards competition.  The competition received a total of 1,615 entries from 255 domestic and 105 international colleges and universities, which were voted upon by a record number of Academy members.

Something to Say, which Lieberman and Lucas made as their master's project at Columbia, tells the story of a young boy who has a lot to say, but the power of language escapes him. Lost in a public-school system that does not suit his needs, his parents fight to help him find his voice.  Please click here to watch the trailer and to learn more about the filmmakers.

The students selected for Columbia Journalism School's M.S. Documentary Specialization are trained to be independent film producers and directors. Under the direction of Professor June Cross and a distinguished group of long form storytellers, including Professor Betsy West, they undertake courses in journalism production, visual storytelling, camerawork, editing; and receive one-on-one coaching from a faculty advisor. Students also learn the business side of documentaries - negotiating partnerships, rights and clearances, and how to develop a winning production trailer. Their master's project, the capstone of their studies at Columbia Journalism School, is a short documentary expected to be of professional quality. The completed films are shown at Columbia Journalism School's annual Doc Festwhich is open to the public.
