Class Spotlight: Prof. Jelani Cobb Teaches "Covering Race"

Media outlets around the world are seeking journalists who can address the subject of race with depth, nuance, and incisiveness. At Columbia Journalism School, students in our Master of Science Programs currently have the opportunity to take the 15-week course "Covering Race," which will give them greater insight into the central debates and formative influence of race in American society and its implications for reportage and media discussion of the subject.

In the video below, acclaimed journalist and historian Jelani Cobb, the Ira J. Lipman Professor of Journalism and Director of the Ira A. Lipman Center for Journalism and Civil and Human Rights at Columbia Journalism School and co-editor, with David Remnick, of the new book The Matter of Black Lives: Writing from The New Yorker, introduces you to the course. "The objective is to produce more journalists who are adept at writing about this subject and have a fluency and knowledge of how this can be implicated in stories they'll be covering every day," Professor Cobb says. Formerly a professor of American history at the University of Connecticut, Professor Cobb is a staff writer at The New Yorker who writes frequently about race, politics, history, and culture.
