We are pleased to present a new story in our series about how Columbia Journalism School has been training students to become leading reporters on politics. As the 2020 U.S. presidential election campaigns ramp up and as political movements and diplomatic challenges around the world make for front page stories every day, the work of journalists is vital for informing the public about the issues at stake, the local and global impact of policies on peoples' lives, the veracity of politicians' claims, and the historical and social contexts for international and domestic conflicts.
In this class spotlight, we are pleased to showcase Columbia Journalism School's "Trumplandia" magazine production course. In this class,
Master of Science Program students work together to create a print and online issue of
Trumplandia magazine, which addresses some significant aspect of American life under the Trump Administration. At the beginning of the semester, the class talks together about what goes into making a magazine, reads up on some great and near-great magazines of the past, and discusses the task of magazines at the present moment. The class then produces its own magazine, which is made available to readers around the world. Each student gains extensive magazine experience by serving a double role as both a contributor to and an editor of
Trumplandia. Columbia's
Master of Science Program offers several
courses that similarly offer students the opportunity to create professional-level publications and broadcasts before they graduate.
